What is referred to as a premium yoga mat usually means an extra thick mat (although not always) or a mat that offers extra support and traction so that you won’t slip. Premium yoga mats are durable and usually will help you with grip and traction. A premium yoga mat may also refer to an eco-friendly and organic choice of yoga mat. Many companies who sell yoga mats have a ‘premium’ mat range.

When it comes to yoga mats, the resounding conclusion one could make is that you really need to try a few different types of mats to find the one that will be perfect for you. Although premium yoga mats are popular, some people still prefer the ’standard’ type of yoga mat or possibly even a cotton yoga mat.

Practicing yoga on a super soft and comfortable mat appeals to many people. Premium/Thick yoga mats generally mean extra cushioning usually without being too soft.

Most of the time the standard yoga mat size is 1/8-inch (3.2 mm) and what most people call the ‘thick yoga mat‘ is double this at 1/4-inch (6.4 mm). But, to make things more confusing, some manufacturer’s call their 1/4-inch (6.4 mm) yoga mats as ‘standard’. It probably makes more sense to refer to the 1/8-inch (3.2 mm) mats as ‘standard’ as there really isn’t anything else that could be used as a yoga mat that would be this thin. When you go to buy your thick yoga mat, make sure you check the manufacturer’s size chart to ensure it the mat that you want. There are also some other yoga mat sizes bedsies the ones already mentioned. Usually the thickest is 1/2-inch (12.8 mm) which is very soft and thick.

A premium yoga mat is a luxurious choice but have an open-heart and be prepared to trial and error a few mats before you find ‘the one’. There are a few creative ways that you can re-use your old yoga mats so you won’t have to feel guilty about buying a ‘new and improved’ one.

Can you really use yoga for weight loss? Yes. Most people write yoga off for simply being stretching. If you take a yoga class at your gym, it will change your beliefs about the benefits of it.You will find a similar calorie burn in yoga as you would in any moderate cardiovascular exercise.

When you are doing hot yoga, you are actually doing resistance exercise as well. When you hear resistance training, you need to think weight lifting. It can be very effective to use your own body weight to create the resistance.Just like any resistance exercise, this activity will work and strengthen your muscles.

It is easy to find variations on exercises you would typically use in training. Yoga is full of types of lunges, squats, push-ups, etc. The reason yoga is more fun is because you are not thinking of these poses as exercises in the traditional sense. There is an art to yoga. You will start to appreciate your body as you see it reflected beautifully back to you from the mirror.

One of the more subtle reasons yoga is effective for weight loss is that it helps you mentally as well as physically. You will find yourself less likely to engage in poor coping behaviors when you develop a level of peace within your day.I am talking about emotional eating.Whenever you eat for reasons other than hunger you are engaging in emotional eating.

If you can commit to doing yoga 3-5 days a week, you will certainly begin to see some weight loss results. Yoga promotes some really beautiful physical results. It can take you by surprise because it doesn’t seem like the kind of exercise that would change your body. Sometimes you get stuck in the mentality that you have to hate the exercise for it to be beneficial. No pain, no gain, right? This is false. It is not necessary to whip your body into submission.Your body will respond well to being treated kindly.

People all over the world have discovered the powerful physical and mental benefits of yoga and yoga meditation. Yoga studios and classes as well as yoga DVDs, books, and home programs can be easily found online. However, before you roll out your yoga mat, get familiar with the many different types of yoga practices that are available to get the best fit for you:

Hatha Yoga: hatha yoga refers to general yoga practice and includes other types of yoga, such as Iyengar and Ashtanga. General hatha yoga classes focus on proper breathing, gentle movement, static poses, balance, relaxation, and centering.

Although the practices started in the Far East, people in the United States have seen countless benefits, both physical and mental, from practicing all these different types of yoga.

Ashtanga Yoga: Ashtanga yoga is also known as “power yoga“, which uses flowing movements to increase strength and stamina. Pushup and lunge-like movements are common in this vigorous and athletic practice.

Bikram Yoga: bikram yoga refers to yoga done in a hot environment (approximately 105 degrees Fahrenheit), which not only promotes a detoxifying sweat, but also aids in flexibility.

Prenatal Yoga: Prenatal yoga is yoga practice specifically designed for pregnant women who need exercises that are safe for them and their babies. Prenatal yoga also focuses on keeping muscles strong, which aids in posture and helps when delivery time comes. Yoga is an excellent way for expectant mothers to keep muscles toned, which not only makes them feel better during their pregnancy, but also helps them get back into shape faster after the baby is delivered.

Still not sure if you’re ready to learn yoga? Order a book on yoga from Amazon or your local library and attempt a few poses. And if you think you hear that inner-pessimist, tell it to pipe down and enjoy the journey!.

Need to work on your abs and back? Try Pilates. It uses the core ab muscles as the central focus for all movement. Thus is it the best choice for working your back and abs.

If you’re seeking more advanced or muscle specific conditioning you should see a certified Pilates instructor who can guide you through the techniques and work on equipment.

Here are a three pilates exercises that you will surely love.

 Hundred
These may hurt but the workout it gives you is worth it.

- Bring your legs into your chest while lying on your back.

- Allow your arms to rest at your sides.

- Lift your shoulder blades and chest off the ground about six inches high.

- Stretch your legs out straight but keep them off the ground six inches then raise your arms six inches.

- Pulse your arms up and down five times as you exhale.

- Pulse for five more beats as you inhale and flip your palms.

- Continue this for ten more sequences so you pump one hundred counts total.

 Raising V-sits
Just so you know, this one will hurt.

- Straighten your legs and lay on your back, lift your arms over your head and stretch them out.

- Lift your back, legs and arms up all at the same time using your abs.

- Keep your legs straight and back nice and flat.

- Sit up in a V” position with your torso strong in one piece and body bent at the hips.

- Contract your abs and roll down slowly as you exhale.

- Start off with three to five sets.

- As it becomes easier increase your sets.

Floating chest

- Lay down on your tummy and stretch your legs out straight with your arms at your side.

- Rest your head on the ground, forehead down.

- Exhale, lift your torso and head off the ground while you stretch your arms back behind you and push down your shoulders.

- Keep your head in line with your spine and eye line at the appropriate level.

- Hold the position and inhale.

- Let out the breath and release your body to the ground.

- Do this exercise ten times.

So, what’s so darned important about a yoga towel? A towel is a towel, right? No, not really. But, before we extol the many rewards of a good yoga towel, let’s discuss a bit about Yoga, itself.

The Benefits of Yoga

Yoga aids you in awakening your inner body and enlivening your outer body! As you clear your mind to give your full attention to each pose, you awaken your “inner body” awareness of the present moment. Your “outer body” profits as each pose nourishes, energizes, and revitalizes every cell, fiber, and tissue through enhanced breathing, flexibility, strength and alignment. The goal of yoga practice is to create a union between the body, mind and spirit.

If you desire to master a yoga pose, you will need extraordinary patience, plus time and dedication. A beginner should not be disappointed if they don’t do a pose flawlessly on the first try. But, slowly over time, as you practice and try to perform each pose flawlessly, without pushing yourself too far physically or beating yourself up mentally, you will find that you are developing flexibility, strength, and energy physically and feeling more peaceful and clear mentally.

Choose a fresh, peaceful space for your practice area, and if you can, one with a bare floor and an accessible wall. Avoid distractions, such as cell phones, during your yoga practice. For optimum function, you should not eat for at least 2 hours before practicing. If you find you need to eat, then try to eat something light, such as a piece of fruit, but no more than 1 hour before you start your yoga practice.

If you should feel pain or discomfort as you undertake a pose, pause or stop, then try again with more mindful movement.

Yoga props and yoga accessories, such as yoga mats, yoga bolsters, yoga straps, yoga blocks, yoga mat bags, and even yoga towels are designed to help you in moving deeper into a pose, in performing a perfect pose, and in practicing in a healthful way.

There are a lot excellent reasons to consider using yoga props, not the least of which is that they help in relieving discomfort, even pain, during difficult yoga poses.

Yoga props also assist in preventing injury when you are sometimes tempted to push too hard to “get it right.”

Doing yoga releases tightness, and using props helps with stress relief by providing the support necessary for you to relax (but not be lazy) in your practice.

The plumb line, that is, “head-over-heels” body alignment, is crucial in doing yoga poses correctly. Yoga props are fundamental in aiding appropriate alignment.

Ease and flexibility of movement are are another healthy part of the benefits to using yoga props. Certain props create space in the joints and allow the body more fluid movement without putting stress on a particular joint.

As we mentioned earlier, yoga practice is concerned with unifying the mind, body and spirit through the development of a deeper awareness and the development of mindfulness. How can yoga props assist in this great goal? When you are able to simply focus your mind on doing your yoga poses perfectly, rather than worrying about transitory limitations, you will go deeper into that balance of mind, body, and spirit.

How to Use and Appreciate Your Yoga Towel

A yoga towel does more than you might think! Absorbency, naturally, comes to mind, particularly if you’re into hot yoga, like Bikram. The ability to wick away moisture (and sweat!) after a especially energizing routine is beneficial, and there are quite a few super-aborbent yoga towels manufactured with microfibers that do just that. Plus they dry quicker than cotton towels. Most are produced with organic dyes and can easily be washed and dried safely. A mat-size yoga towel places a hygienic layer between you and your yoga mat.

To be sure, there’s more than one use for your yoga towel. Many yoga towels are designed implicitly to prevent slipping while you practice your yoga poses. A few yoga towels have “silicone eco nubs” on one side, others have clear rubber dots, still others have a latex-free “gripping” agent. When placed face down, the nubs or dots, or a similar gripping agent, grip your yoga mat (or the floor if you’ve forgotten to buy a yoga mat and there isn’t one available!). Once you diffuse your weight in a yoga posture, the gripping action starts, thus keeping your hands or feet from slipping mid-stretch. If you want a steadier, more stable practice, a yoga towel is crucial.

Yoga towels come in handy as a top layer for your yoga mat, as a yoga mat substitute if you’ve forgotten your mat, or as brought up previously above, while performing “hot” yoga, such as Bikram. Because most yoga towels are of super-absorbent materials, they out-perform a regular towel. A yoga towel that is the same size as your yoga mat is quite fashionable, as well as hygienic and healthy.

There are a variety of yoga towel colors available, but most come in earth tones.

Meditation is widely known as a potent method of focusing the mind and healing the body, as well as attaining self-realization. There are many different ways to mediate but one of the most powerful of these is Chakra Meditation. This process is also known by its alternative names of Chakra Healing and Chakra Balancing.

Chakra Meditation – Knowing The Basics

Chakra Meditation is the art of balancing and energizing all the seven energy centers in the body, called Chakras, in order to align the flow of energy through them. Here’s a brief description of these seven energy centers, or the Chakras.

*Root Chakra, also famous as the Base Chakra, is located at the bottom of human spine. It is associated to the ‘Earth’ constituent, which governs our general health, safety, and richness in life.

*Orange Chakra, also called the Naval or Sacral Chakra, is situated at the center of abdomen. It is related to the ‘Water’ element, which governs our sexuality and emotions.

*Power Chakra, also called the Solar Plexus, is situated just above the naval region. It is related to the ‘Fire’ element, which governs our will power, metabolism, and autonomy.

*Heart Chakra is situated right at the center of the chest. It is related to the ‘Air’ element, which governs our feelings of love, compassion, and general relationships.

*Throat Chakra is positioned at the bottom of the throat. It is associated to the ‘Sound’ feature, which administers our uniqueness, communication capability, and tone.

*Brow Chakra, also called The Third Eye Chakra, is situated between the brows on the forehead. It is related to the ‘Light’ element, which governs our perception, interpretation, and visualization.

*Crown Chakra is situated at the top of the head. It is related to the ‘thought’ element, which governs our wisdom, knowledge, and consciousness.

You can calm the mind by focusing on these seven important energy centers and synchronizing them. This in turn will result in lower stress and greater contentment. Chakra Meditation can also help to heal any malady which is connected to these seven Chakras.

Chakra Meditation – The Process

Chakra Meditation involves three techniques in this order.

*Grounding - the idea behind this technique is to build a connection between your body and the Earth itself. You begin by visualizing a root growing from you and penetrating into the Earth. You need to really focus and visualize this in order for it to work.

*Centering Method. This method is imperative as it organizes your body to obtain the advantages of Chakra Meditation. Again, the purpose of this method is not too complex. Just take 4-6 deep inhalations and feel each body component from head to toe being comfortable. This procedure involves tapering and soothing each body part from toe, and then imagining the act of a potter who middles a pot on the pottery helm.

*Relaxation method. The Relaxation method is the principal work in the entire Chakra Meditation procedure. Everybody has his or her own technique of entertainment. Just locate out your favored form of relaxing the body and attach to it.

There are plenty of techniques of performing Chakra Meditation, the most famous are as follows

*Sit or lie down in a comfortable position.

*Untie all your clothing so that there is no stress on any part of your body, and close your both eyes.

*Take deep, but natural breaths to help you relax – just let your body breath naturally and try not to think about it.

*Try to feel and be aware of every part of your body, beginning at your toes and moving upwards. As you do this, also become conscious of your surroundings, the grass or furniture you are sitting on. Be in the moment and relax.

*Nearly all the negative thoughts and feelings should not be shunned. Let them be! With time and ordinary practice, these feelings will vanish instinctively. Relatively, when no such negative feeling upsets you that is the time when you should think that you have perfected the knack of Chakra Meditation.

*Don’t hinder your awareness! Let it flow freely from one part of the body to another.

This meditation exercise is beneficial at any time of day or night and may be done for as long as you like – the longer you meditate, the better the results will be.

Dahn yoga developed in South Korea not India and is modern unlike most forms of yoga. Known in Korea as Dahnak or Dahn Hak, the first Dahn yoga center was opened in Seoul in the 1980s by the originator of Dahn yoga, Il-chi Lee, although it is reported to be based on a much older tradition. It soon spread to the USA.

Like hatha yoga, which is much better known in the west, Dahn yoga unites physical postures and breathing exercises and focuses on aligning the body and mind in order to expand the mind and allow better circulation of energy within the body. It also proposes some physical benefits like promoting both longer life and improved vitality and quality of life, improving general health and fitness and lowering stress levels.

Dahn yoga also claims to help the body learn to heal itself naturally, by improving the circulation of life energy and its connection with the mind and consciousness. This is done physically by exercises which are said to remove blockages in its path. Spiritual healing is also promoted through meditation along with improved relaxation. In yoga practice mental health and physical tensions are released and like other forms of yoga it is a holistic practice whose benefits reverberate into daily life.

Dahn Hak philosophy includes certain principles of the action and movement of life energy (ki, also spelled chi or qi) that students are taught during the classes. There tends to be more teaching of the ideas behind the practice than you would find in a hatha yoga class in the West. This, together with the high prices that are often charged in comparison with other yoga classes, has resulted in some accusations of cult status. However, there does not seem to be any evidence of the human rights issues that are associated with dangerous cults. Nobody will stop you from leaving a Dahn yoga class, and making large profits is not by itself evidence of a cult, or many businesses would fall into that definition! These accusations may simply be caused by differences between north east Asian culture and Western culture which lead many mainstream Korean and Japanese martial arts and religious groups to be viewed as cults by some Americans.

To stimulate the ki to pass freely through all the meridians of the body will begin with meridian stretching exercises in a typical Dahn yoga class. These are followed by a series of postures and often a period of meditation or breathing exercises that focuses on releasing stagnant ki and storing fresh ki in the body’s center, the dan jeong or 2nd chakra, located in the abdomen just below the navel. A non-combative form of martial art called Dahn Mu Do are taught in some Dahn classes, its more like tai chi than yoga.

Students report many health benefits from their practice of Dahn yoga as with other forms of yoga including resolution of many problems that are frequently stress-related such as back pain, neck and shoulder tension, migraine and digestive disorders and sleeping problems.
